What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is usually caused by viral infection, but there are other possible causes of hepatitis, including autoimmune hepatitis, hepatitis caused by secondary medication, toxins and alcohol, and autoimmune hepatitis is the disease that occurs when the body produce antibodies against liver tissues.
What are the symptoms of hepatitis viruses?
The signs and symptoms of severe hepatitis appear rapidly. These include:
- Fatigue.
- Flu-like symptoms.
- Dark urine.
- Pale Stool.
- Abdominal pain.
- Anorexia.
- Unwarranted weight loss.
What are the types of hepatitis viruses?
Viral hepatitis is classified as:
- Hepatitis A: it is transmitted by eating food or water contaminated with stool from infected person.
- Hepatitis B: transmitted through direct contact with the body fluids of the infected person.
- Hepatitis C: transmitted through direct contact with body fluids of infected person.
- Hepatitis D: A rare form of hepatitis that occurs only in conjunction with hepatitis B infection.
- Hepatitis E: a water-transmitted disease found mainly in areas suffering from poor sanitation.
What is the diagnosis of viral hepatitis?
Liver function tests examine the levels of some enzymes and proteins in the blood. Levels above or below normal can indicate liver problems. Some common liver function tests include:
- Alanine aminotransferase (ALT).
- Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) enzyme.
- ALP.
- Albumin and total protein.
- Bilirubin.
- Gamma-glutamil T (GGT) enzyme.
- Lactate hydrogen stripper (LD) enzyme.
- Prothrombin time (PT).
Tests to demonstrate the cause of the hepatitis:
- Hepatitis viruses: HbsAg, HCV
- Autoantibodies: ANA, AMA, LKM antibodies.
Vaccination:
You can prevent some forms of hepatitis through vaccinations and lifestyle precautions.
